As part of the art of gifting we got together with Alexandria to discuss her inspirations, self-care rituals and what gifting means to her,
Alexandria Coe is a British artist known for her minimalist, evocative line drawings that explore themes of femininity and the human form. Her work is celebrated for its simplicity, using bold yet delicate strokes to convey intimacy and emotion. Based in London, Coe often draws inspiration from the natural world and personal narratives, creating pieces that feel both universal and deeply personal.
TBS: Can you tell us about your background and how you got started as an artist?
AC: I actually studied Textile design- and kind of hated it by the end of my degree. I wanted to start again and in doing so literally started with - the beginning (in my opinion of all art) which is drawing. From there my passion and career started to merge as one.
TBS: Your work beautifully captures the essence of the female form with such minimalism. What led you to develop this distinctive style?
AC: My masters is in fashion communication -and delved into the imagery in the fashion and beauty industries and how violent and harmful they can be to audiences of both women (and men) in how they portray ideals of women. So when I started I wanted to create an image that was the opposite of that- unlaboured- imperfect. A complete parallel to airbrushed society. I wanted to represent the essence of a human rather than focus on the minor fails and details.
TBS: Can you share a little about your creative process? Do you have a routine or ritual that helps you get into the flow of creating?
AC: I like to have a space of my own- I can shut the door- put my headphones on and retreat into my own world.
TBS: If you could offer one piece of advice to aspiring artists, what would it be?
AC: Be original to you- the world is obsessed with trends but longevity in any creative business is about an authentic message- and that message doesn’t have to be that deep or complex, (of course it can be) - it just has to be yours
TBS: What inspires you most when creating? Are there specific themes or moments that consistently spark your creativity?
AC: Emotions- I think as a woman our bodies and minds have been so tightly unclosed as one that everything merges. My emotional state can be felt in the body and therefore in the bodies I choose to draw.
TBS: How do external factors, like fashion, culture, or nature, shape your artistic vision?
AC: I spend hours often creating mood boards from retro fashion or interior magazines, and photoshoots. I love that slight nostalgia of the past- but I just feel everything was designed better- It takes me to a dream-like state and this really inspires me.
TBS: Do you have any daily rituals or practices that help you recharge, either physically or mentally?
AC: I like to move-i like to do pilates- or run- I like to get outside- have a walk- I love a long hot shower (and if i had one a hot bath) I think its important to have these moments in the day where you switch off from your phone or other people and get immersed in something really nourishing.
TBS: What has been your favourite product within your beauty standard box and why?
AC: The Olverum body polish- I never knew I needed a polish before- But my skin is like new after- so soft.
TBS: What's a memorable gift you've received that holds a special place in your heart, and why?
AC: I have a pair of antique heart shaped earrings that I am always wearing that my mother gave to me. We don't see each other much as I'm always travelling and living abroad right now. So to me they're very special and even more so that she always knows me well.
TBS: What is on your Christmas list this year?
AC: I actually don’t like Christmas gifts- never have…. I think buy yourself (those around ) something kind- something you can share together. Christmas is a trying time, and for many not always joyous, so I think time is the best gift anyone can give.
Alexandria will be joining us at our pop up event at White coco on the Kings Road to personalise your Beauty standard gift boxes from 5th December 2024
